Tim Berners-Lee, the mastermind behind the internet as we know it, predicts a monumental shift in the way we will trust artificial intelligence (AI) within the next 35 years. Drawing parallels to the confidence we place in doctors, Berners-Lee foresees AI assistants becoming integral parts of our lives, revolutionizing how we interact with the web.

In Berners-Lee's vision of the future, he told CNBC that AI will fundamentally transform our online experiences. With the advent of innovative AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, companies are banking on consumers embracing digital chatbots for a wide range of tasks, from seeking information to assisting with writing and even coding.

Firms like Samsung and Humane AI are already pioneering AI-powered devices, such as smartphones and wearables, to reimagine our web interactions. Berners-Lee envisions a world where AI assistants serve us much like trusted professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and bankers.

Speaking on a video call, Berners-Lee emphasized the importance of cultivating trust in AI assistants. He believes that individuals will rely on AI to work for them effectively and reliably in the future, akin to the trust placed in medical professionals.

"Some people worry about whether, in 35 years, AI will be more powerful than us. One of the things I predict — but it’s something we may have to fight for — is you will have an AI assistant, which you can trust, and it works for you, like a doctor," Berners-Lee said.

Robert Blumofe, the global chief technology officer of Akamai, echoes Berners-Lee's sentiments, predicting a future where AI agents take the reins of web interactions. Blumofe envisions a scenario where AI manages routine online tasks, allowing humans to prioritize physical interactions and real-world experiences. While Blumofe anticipates that entertainment content will still be accessed online, he believes that many daily functions of our online lives will be seamlessly handled by AI agents.

“You can imagine a world years from now where the web is a realm of AI agents and humans no longer effectively use the web. It would all be done through AI agents; you would never go directly to your bank account online, or your health provider online, or any e-commerce sites” he said.
