The Andhra Pradesh Police have arrested two people, including a worker of Telugu Desam Party (TDP), in connection with the suicide case of a woman who ended her life allegedly due to online harassment.

Geetanjali Devi's death sparked an outcry in the state, with people from multiple corners demanding strict actions against those responsible for the suicide.

The suspects, Rambabu Pasumarthi from TDP and Durgarao, were arrested by the Andhra Pradesh police.

"Rambabu engaged in trolling Geetanjali Devi on Twitter, making derogatory remarks, while Durga Rao resorted to similar misconduct on Instagram. Such reprehensible actions inflicted deep emotional pain upon Ms. Geetanjali Devi, ultimately leading to her tragic demise," the police said in a statement.

Geetanjali was found in an injured state near Tenali Railway Station last week. She died on Monday. Her family has alleged that she took the extreme step after being trolled on social media by the supporters of TDP and Jana Sena for speaking in favour of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Speaking to India Today TV, Guntur Superintendent of Police Tushar Dudi said the cops identified nearly 80 social media users who posted derogatory and sexual comments about the woman.

“She had mentioned to her family and friends about a few of the accused and the social media handles. We have that list. Our investigation team is going through the social media platforms wherever she was brutally trolled, we are collecting a database,” Tushar Dudi said.

"We have been able to arrest two people, and the rest of the accused, depending upon their roles, will also face necessary action," he added.

A special team has been formed under the supervision of ASP Nachiketh to investigate the matter.

The Guntur SP also stressed that it was a case of suicide, ruling out the claims that the train accident was fabricated.

"As of now, it is a case of suicide. We have taken statements from the loco pilot, her family, friends, and everyone indicated suicide. We will explore all angles. As of now, it is suicide only,” he said.
