Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha election, plans are underway to redevelop Kamla Market in North Delhi like Connaught Place. The redevelopment project involves the demolition of the outer area of Kamla Market.

Notices have already been issued to clear encroachments around the Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) and the surrounding outer market premises.

According to a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) official, the outer market's aesthetics, including signage, footpaths, and overall layout, would be revamped using white marble and modern design elements reminiscent of Connaught Place.

Strict regulations will be enforced regarding shop signage. Each shop will be allocated limited space for signage display. This initiative aims to restore the historical charm of Kamla Market and position it as a premier attraction in the national capital.

Kamla Market holds a significant place in Delhi's history, having been inaugurated by India's first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, on November 29, 1951. However, over the years, the market has become dilapidated due to encroachments and neglect, diminishing its status as a prominent business centre.

"Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena reviewed the market on February 23 and ordered revamping of the area. Largely, the market has been occupied by air cooler manufacturers and the footpaths have been encroached, which will be removed soon," said the MCD official.
