NEW YORK (PIX11) -- On Saturday, thousands are expected to take to the streets of New York and across the country as part of a "day of defiance" dubbed "No Kings," but what exactly does the slogan mean?
"No Kings" day was organized in response to a military parade and birthday celebration set on Flag Day this Saturday, which also coincides with President Donald Trump's birthday, according to the event website.
"The flag doesn’t belong to President Trump. It belongs to us. We’re not watching history happen. We’re making it," the website said.
The nationwide demonstration is meant to protest the Trump administration's federal funding cuts to Social Security, SNAP, Medicaid and education as well as the ramped up deportation efforts.
More than 1,500 cities and small towns are expected to host rallies and marches on "No Kings" day however the movement holds the core principle of nonviolent action.
"We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events," the website said.
A map of all the "No Kings" events can be found on the organization's website while a list of events planned for New York and New Jersey can be found here.
