LOWER MANHATTAN (PIX 11) — As protestors gathered across the city Saturday, some of those protests culminated at Foley Square where tensions flared between demonstrators and police.
One demonstrator who wished to remain anonymous told PIX 11 News that the rally was a mix of anti-ICE protestors and supporters of Palestine demonstrating. She said that with everything going on right now in the country, she felt it was important for protestors to show their dissent.
Droves of people filled the streets and marched through Lower Manhattan yelling anti-ICE chants as well as Free Gaza.
Palestinian flags were visible throughout the crowd as well as signs that read “No justice, no peace”. Drones hovered overhead, smoke bombs filled the air with red smoke, and police in riot gear maintained a heavy presence.
Things remained mostly peaceful although there were some tense moments. Several people were taken into custody at the rally.
The NYPD could not confirm how many people were taken into custody at that protest, although they did confirm that at least eight people were taken into custody at protests across the city Saturday after receiving multiple verbal warnings.
