NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The New York International Auto Show attracted hundreds of car fanatics during its opening ceremony.
Cars of all types will be exhibited until April 7.
“This is our eighth year here. I come here every year with my brother,” said Ryan Murry.
The day started with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band. Followed by a parade of high-performance sports cars, vintage autos, custom rides, and much more.
The spectacular event was briefly interrupted by environmental activists who showed their discontent towards the auto industry and spilled oil on the floor.
“Sorry for the interruption but this is an emergency,” Said one of the activists. “Our love for cars is killing us is killing the earth.” He added seconds later.
They were eventually escorted out by security. No official arrests were made.
The show went on and more car lovers arrived at the Jacob Javits Center to see and test out some of the latest vehicles.
“I love this, the style, the aesthetic.” Said Harris Levy.
This opening day was not just about cars.
Tracey Morgan who received a kidney transplant 12 years ago Joined the Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Health, Donate Life, and Greater New York Auto dealers to talk about the importance of organ donation.
“Somebody donated and made me believe in people again it really made believe in people again,” said the actor in a very emotional way.
“Imagine that, helping somebody else, we should all do that, we should all think about it.” Added Morgan.
“In the last 10 years, we have doubled the number of transplants, saving thousands of New Yorkers' lives but our registry struggles we only have 48% of the population enrolled. And the national average in other states is 64%.” Expressed, Aisha Tator, Executive Director of Donate Life.
According to the commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles. 85 percent of all New Yorkers check the donate box at the DMV office.
The also comedian, Tracy Morgan ended by saying “One by one we have to save each other.”
The NY International Auto Show not only displays the future of driving but also delivers a very important message that can help save many lives in the present.
The Red Cross CEO Jose Dominguez received a $25,000 donation from Auto Show President Mark Schienberg to help cover the cost of a new Emergency Response Vehicle.
