A murder suspect, who was shot by police on March 7, succumbed to his injuries at a government hospital in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli on Monday, officials said.
The man, identified as Petchidurai, allegedly hacked a road construction worker to death near Velankulli in Tirunelveli, along with his accomplice, Chandru, officials added.
The duo had also damaged several vehicles and attacked a government bus driver near Thiruvidaimarudur. When a police team reached the spot to arrest the accused, they also attacked a constable, Shenthil, and escaped from the scene.
The police then surrounded the duo in a nearby paddy field and then shot Petchidurai in the leg when the accused tried to escape and arrested them.

A purported video of the incident also went viral on social media where police can be seen surrounding Petchidurai in the paddy field and then attacking him.
Following the incident, Petchidurai was rushed to a government hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A detailed investigation has been initiated by the authorities over the matter.
