CHENNAI: Grab a bottle of water and get to your
polling station
before 10am to cast your vote, as day temperatures may inch closer to 40°C in the city while
heatwave
condition is likely to prevail over isolated pockets in north interior districts, said weathermen.
IMD
has forecast day temperatures to be around 37°C38°C in the city and suburbs, while private forecasters said high
humidity
triggered by the entry of sea breeze in the afternoon could add to the discomfort.
“For the next 48 hours, skies may be partly cloudy. Maximum temperatures may be around 37-38 and minimum temperatures may be around 27-28 deg C. Relative humidity may be at 50-85% over the coastal areas,” IMD’s bulletin said.
On Friday, a few pockets over the plains of north interior districts may record temperatures around 39-42°C, and it may be around 34-38°C over the plains of the rest of Tamil Nadu. Relative humidity may be around 30-50% in the afternoon and 40-75% during the rest of the day over plains of interior districts.
On Thursday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 37.3°C and 38.7°C, around 2.5°C and 2.7°C above normal. Humidity levels were between 60% and 70% in these two stations.
Temperatures in interior districts such as Dharmapuri, Erode, Karur, Madurai, Salem,
Trichy
, Tiruttani and Vellore crossed 40°C, with Vellore recording the highest at 41.5°C.
Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist of
Skymet Weather
, said day temperatures may be high between 11am and 4pm in the city and from 12noon to 4pm in interior areas. The
temperature
may reach its peak around 1pm.
“It is better for people to step out early and make sure they stay hydrated,” he said.
