Intense heat is likely to grip Delhi by mid-April, with the maximum temperature expected to touch 40 degrees Celsius in the next seven days, according to the India Meteorological Department.

Intense heat is likely to grip Delhi by mid-April, with the maximum temperature expected to touch 40 degrees Celsius in the next seven days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On Monday, the maximum temperature is expected to soar to 37 degrees Celsius, two notches above the previous day's figure, while the minimum is set to settle at 17.4 degrees.

On Sunday, the national capital recorded 35.6 degrees Celsius as the maximum temperature, a notch above the seasonal average.

Najafgarh recorded a high temperature of 37.3 degrees Celsius at 6.30 pm on Sunday, the weather department said.

In its latest bulletin for the next seven days from April 8 to 14, the highest temperature of 39 degrees Celsius is expected on Saturday (April 13).

The bulletin has forecast mainly clear sky on Monday and Friday; partly cloudy sky from Tuesday to Thursday; and very light rain with thunderstorm on April 13 and 14.

On March 29, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 37.8 degrees Celsius, marking the warmest day so far this year.

While the maximum was five notches above the season's average, the minimum temperature recorded at 21.8 degrees Celsius was four notches above normal.

Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 37 degrees Celsius on March 27, which was then the highest temperature recorded this year so far.
