'Inhumane, illegal': Delhi Congress chief after rat-hole miner's house razed

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Arvinder Singh Lovely on Friday condemned the demolition of the home of rat-hole miner Wakeel Hassan who helped in the Silkyara tunnel rescue mission, terming it as "inhuman and illegal."

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) demolished Hassan's house on Wednesday, as he had "encroached on DDA land despite several warnings" as per the statutory body.

The Congress leader criticised the BJP-led central government for razing Hassan's house, saying that this was the "reward he received" for helping in the Uttarakhand tunnel rescue.

The Congress leader called for immediate relocation of Wakeel Hassan to a nearby residence where he currently resides, along with a financial compensation of Rs 10 lakh to rebuild his house.

Highlighting the impact on Hassan's children who are attending a local school, the leader deemed it inhumane to displace his family, especially during ongoing school exams.

The DDA on Thursday said that Hassan's family was informed before the demolition and had enough time for evacuation. They emphasised that their actions were routine and non-discriminatory, targeting no particular individual.

However, Hassan, in a video message, had accused the authorities of demolishing his house without any notice. "My house is the only thing I asked for as an award (for Uttarakhand rescue operation), but DDA razed my home without any notice," Hassan said.

He said that he was assured by the government that his house wouldn't be touched, but it was razed anyway.
