1 year ago 23

Priyanka Jarkiholi, 27-year-old MBA graduate and daughter of public works minister Satish Jarkiholi, is stepping into the political arena by contesting from Chikkodi constituency. In an interview with TOI, She opens up about her plunge into the political fray, the public's response to her candidacy, and the hurdles she faces.
Was it your choice to contest or was it a family aspiration? What traits from your father do you think will help you in politics?

I made the decision independently.

With years as a social worker, I'm prepared for mainstream politics and ready to tackle challenges, provided voters give me a chance to serve. I inherit my father's dedication to public service and value family and health like he does.
Do you believe you're ready to engage in mainstream politics at your current age?

I've encountered fewer obstacles than anticipated because I took proactive steps before entering politics, such as assisting my father and engaging in social work. Now, I feel adequately prepared and am eagerly awaiting an opportunity to contribute to mainstream politics.
Apart from the five guarantee schemes of the govt, what factors do you feel are in your favour this election?
The prevailing sentiment of anti-incumbency against the current MP is a significant factor favouring us. Another strength lies in having five out of eight MLAs in the region, bolstering the support base.

What are the issues in Chikkodi constituency?
The primary concern among voters is the provision of irrigation facilities for their fertile lands. Despite the presence of the Krishna river and its tributaries, most agricultural land still relies on rainfall. Other issues, comparatively minor, can be resolved through existing schemes at both the state and central govt levels.
From the country's perspective, do you consider this election to be crucial?
Absolutely, this election holds immense significance as it will determine the trajectory of our nation. We're witnessing alarming disparities in fund allocation among states by the central govt, which is perpetuating discrimination. To steer the country towards a brighter future, substantial changes are imperative.
