BJP MP Tejasvi Surya was briefly detained by the police on Tuesday while he was protesting in Bengaluru. He was later released.

The Bangalore South MP was protesting after a shopkeeper was beaten by a few men for allegedly playing loud music at the time of azaan (Islamic call to prayer).

The shopkeeper, Mukesh alleged that he was beaten for playing 'Hanuman Chalisa'. However, the police FIR only mentioned that he was beaten by the accused men for playing loud music.

On Tuesday, Tejasvi Surya led a protest by BJP workers and Hindu organisations at Nagarathpet against the incident.

Videos from the spot showed BJP workers chanting 'Hanuman Chalisa' in protest.

The police then detained Tejasvi Surya and the BJP leader was escorted to the police station.

Before the protest, the police arrested five people, including two Hindu men, for assaulting Mukesh.

An attempt to murder case has also been lodged against the accused persons.
