A woman in Andhra Pradesh died by suicide allegedly due to online harassment. Her family has alleged that she took the extreme step after she was trolled on social media by workers of the opposition parties TDP and Jana Sena for speaking in favour of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.
According to the police, the woman, Geetanjali, was found in an injured state near Tenali Railway Station last week. She died on Monday.
"As per the version of the Loco Pilot (of the train), she committed suicide by coming in front of a train, sustained multiple injuries all over the body, admitted to GGH, Guntur where she succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment Monday," the police said in a statement.
Her family has lodged a police complaint alleging that she took her life after facing harassment and online abuse.
Reacting to the news, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
The Chief Minister directed the officials to provide immediate support to Geetanjali's family and announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 20 lakh.
He directed officials to take strong action against the social media users who allegedly posted inappropriate comments on Geetanjali's interview on a Youtube channel.
Meanwhile, the ruling YSRCP workers staged protests demanding justice for Geetanjali.
