Amazon
’s proprietary cashier-less technology offers US customers a convenient
retail buying experience
. Called “Just Walk Out,” this system allows customers to scan an app to enter a store and leave with their items without paying at the counter.
According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the e-commerce major is planning to push its cashier-less shopping technology into more
third-party stores
in 2024 while reducing its dependence on the technology.
The company revealed that about 140 stores use the system and Amazon plans to more than double that number by the end of 2024.
Amazon’s plans for its Just Walk Out system
Amazon is reportedly planning to expand its
Just Walk Out
system to third-party stores in the US. This includes stadiums and Hudson News locations at airports, at the same, taking the technology out of its own existing
Fresh grocery stores
.
Meanwhile, the company is expected to rely on “smart” shopping carts for its stores. These carts keep a tab on users' items as well as charge them when they leave the stores and even send them a digital receipt of the same.
Amazon claimed that Fresh customers tend to spend more when they are using these carts than those who don’t use them.
Just Walk Out, has also been plagued by hiccups including customer confusion over how it works, missed items and delays in sending receipts. Customers reported that Amazon’s cashier-less shopping system sometimes takes hours or even days to send the receipts.
Another recent report by The Information claimed that Amazon’s technology relies on human reviewers in India to watch customers as they shop.
The company denied this allegation. In a release, Amazon said: "Associates don't watch live video of shoppers to generate receipts - that's taken care of automatically by the computer vision algorithms.”
However, Amazon explained that human reviewers are necessary to help improve accuracy.
