NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – The union representing New York City sanitation workers is demanding action after five garbage collectors got sick with a potentially deadly disease.
The disease, "leptospirosis," is spread by contact with rat urine. The health department reported 24 cases of it last year, five of which were sanitation workers.
Their union is pushing for state lawmakers to pass a bill that would provide benefits for workers and their families if they are permanently injured or killed by the disease.
