Would definitely pick Salt for England in T20 World Cup: Brett Lee

1 year ago 18

Former Australia pacer Bret Lee believes that KKR wicketkeeper-batter Phil Salt should be a definite pick for England in their T20 World Cup squad. Lee opines that Salt’s performance in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 makes him too hard to ignore for the World Cup starting from June 1. Salt has been a pivotal batting option in the current KKR squad, and played a match-winning role with his 68 off 33 balls in his side's cruising victory over DC by 7 wickets on April 29.

After Pant’s daring call to bat first at the Eden Gardens after winning the toss, Salt’s fiery start left too little to be done from the rest of KKR’s batting unit in their 154-run chase. Salt’s services were roped in by KKR as a replacement for his England teammate Jason Roy, who pulled out of IPL 2024 citing workload management reasons. Much to the good fortune of the two-time IPL-winning franchise, Salt has gone on to score 392 runs in his 9 matches so far in the ongoing season of the competition.

SALT IS A CLEAN HITTER: LEE

Speaking at a post-match show on Star Sports, Bret Lee explained how Salt’s batting makes him a perfect fit for England’s World Cup plans.

“I would definitely pick him. His game to me looks uncomplicated, it looks very structured in a sense where he knows exactly through his mind what he's doing, doesn't try to over-hit the ball, he is a very clean hitter of the ball, such a great ball striker, but doesn't go out there and try to, you know, do all these different funky little shots. The ball's up, he hits you in the area where he's meant to hit you, and he backs himself, which is, you know, the most important part of it.” Bret Lee said.

With this win, KKR have now cushioned their place in the second spot in the IPL 2024 points table, standing on 12 points in their 9 games so far. KKR will be looking to bank on this momentum as they shift focus to their upcoming clash against MI on May 3.
