PATNA: Sunil Chauhan, a resident of Gopalganj, has been in jail for the last three years after being

arrested

in July 2021 on charges of abducting and murdering his wife Lata Devi, besides disposing of her body. On Tuesday, in a dramatic turn of events, Lata was produced in court after she was arrested from Ballia. She was sent to judicial custody on Wednesday.
Despite Lata's brother, Chandra Bhushan Prasad, lodging a complaint in 2021 that Chauhan had abducted and murdered her, Bihar police did not give up looking for Lata's body.

The hunt led them to Ballia in Uttar Pradesh where the woman was found living with her second

husband

and a child. Police said the truth came to light through the phone records of the woman's brother.
Gopalganj town SHO Om Prakash Chouhan said Prasad had lodged a case with them on July 25, 2021, accusing his brother-in-law and five others of abducting and murdering his sister Lata. "Following the complaint, Sunil was arrested and has been in judicial custody since then. Recently, police traced her brother's mobile phone and found that he had contacted Lata in January 2024. We detained the brother and interrogated him, following which he disclosed the woman's location," said Chouhan.
