PILIBHIT: A

24-year-old woman

is battling for her life in the

intensive care unit

of a private hospital in Bareilly after sustaining severe abdominal injuries allegedly inflicted by her husband. The victim, identified as Kiran, was violently kicked in the abdomen by her husband, resulting in a rupture in her intestines, said police.
Following a complaint lodged by the victim's brother, Pramod Kumar, the police on Thursday night filed charges against the woman's husband as well as eight other members of his family.

A resident of Lalaurikhera block under the jurisdiction of Jahanabad police station, Pramod alleged in his complaint that he had arranged the marriage of his sister, Kiran, to Rajendra Kumar from Devipura village under the Neuria police station on June 22, 2022. However, after the marriage, his brother-in-law and his relatives began subjecting Kiran to severe abuse, demanding a

dowry

of Rs 2 lakh in cash and a luxury car. “We had already spent a significant sum on the wedding,” he said.
“On Feb 6, my brother-in-law physically assaulted my sister by kicking her in the abdomen. Other members of his family were also complicit in the violence against her. When I received the news from her over the phone, I hurried to her residence and took her to a private hospital in Pilibhit. However, due to the severity of her condition, she was referred to another medical facility in Bareilly on Feb 7, where the doctors said that her intestines had ruptured severely,” he added.

SHO of Jahanabad police station Mukesh Kumar Shukla said, “Rajendra Kumar, along with his parents and six others, have been charged under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 498A (cruelty towards a woman), 323 (causing voluntary harm), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation), and relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act. The accused will be arrested soon.”
