West Indies continued their dream run in the T20 World Cup 2024 after beating Afghanistan by 104 runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 Group C match. On Tuesday, June 18, Rovman Powell’s men made sure that they finished the group stage unbeaten with a top-place finish. The Afghans, in the meantime, defeated New Zealand, Uganda and Papua New Guinea without having to break a sweat, but had to face a heavy defeat at the hands of the co-hosts.

The decision to field first backfired for Afghanistan as the co-hosts scored 92 runs in the powerplay, the most in the history of the T20 World Cup. Azmatullah Omarzai bore the brunt of some powerful hitting after he leaked 36 runs in his second over. After Brandon King departed early, Nicholas Pooran and Johnson Charles put on 80 runs for the second wicket.

Charles scored 43 before Naveen-ul-Haq accounted for his wicket. However, Pooran carried on to rack up his fifty off 31 balls. The left-handed batter became the first West Indies batter in Men’s T20Is to score 2000 runs and also looked good for his maiden T20I hundred. But he got out in the last over when he was batting on 98 with 6 fours and 8 sixes.

On the back of his knock, West Indies put up a huge score of 218 for 5 on the board. Noor Ahmad was the pick of the Afghan bowlers as he finished with figures of 4-0-20-0. Shai Hope and Andre Russell chipped in with useful knocks of 25 and 26 respectively.
