NEW DELHI: Star wrestler

Vinesh Phogat

has stirred controversy at the selection trials for the

Paris Olympics

by demanding a written assurance from authorities regarding a final trial in the women's 53kg weight class.
Phogat, who had previously competed in the

53kg category

but shifted to 50kg due to

Antim Panghal

earning an Olympic quota in the former, insisted on clarity to ensure her position in the reckoning for the Paris Games.

Phogat refused to start the competition and sought written confirmation of a final trial in the 53kg class. Additionally, she requested permission to participate in both the 50kg and 53kg trials, leading to confusion and delays at the

Sports Authority of India

(SAI) center.
"The wrestlers who are to compete in the 50kg weight class were complaining to the officials," they said.

The delay prompted frustration among other wrestlers, who voiced their concerns to officials after waiting for over two hours.
Meanwhile, the

Indian Olympic Association

(IOA) ad-hoc panel had already announced plans for a final trial to select India's representative in the 53kg category, with the top four wrestlers competing for the opportunity.
"Vinesh wants an assurance from the government. Probably she fears that if WFI gets back control, the federation may change the selection policy," a coach, present at the trials, told PTI.

Explaining Phogat's stance, a coach present at the trials highlighted her desire to secure her future amidst uncertainties surrounding the selection process. Phogat's insistence on clarity reflects her determination to remain in contention for the Paris Games qualification, regardless of the outcome of the trials.
"If she finishes in top-4 today in 53kg, she remains alive for Paris Games qualification," the coach added.
While Phogat's demand for assurance raises concerns over potential interference in selection matters, it underscores the importance of transparency and fairness in the selection process for Olympic representation.
