AHMEDABAD: The
Vastrapur lake
will be
closed
for
repairs
for at least
six months
beginning Wednesday. The condition of the lake, the lower promenade and the wall of which was damaged during heavy rainfall in 2022, has only deteriorated since.
The CCTVs, sound systems and lights have stopped working and bandicoots have made the place a nightmare for joggers. Having realized after two years that things are so bad that they cannot get any worse, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to repair and renovate the lake.
The AMC on Tuesday said that the lake will be closed for visitors from Feb 28 to Aug 27. However, sources said that if the repair work is not completed within the given deadline, then they may keep it closed for some more time.
Sources said that in 2022, a portion of the wall behind the Narsinh Mehta statue at the lake got damaged during monsoon. There are big potholes on the walkway at the lower promenade and almost all the gates and railings at the lake are severely damaged. Besides, infestation of rodents is another issue the AMC faces.
When the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority developed Vastrapur Lake in 2003, four fountains were installed on the lake premises and an amusement park was also built. None of the fountains are working now. Sources said the stormwater pipelines at the lake will also be repaired.
The AMC will spend Rs 6 crore on the walkway and the lake wall in the first phase of renovation. In the second phase, the garden will be repaired and restored and its beautification will be carried out for Rs 10 crore.
