TRICHY: With the drinking water yield from

Kollidam rivers

showing a continuous decline, the urban local body has introduced additional austerity measures in the city. Previously, areas in

Srirangam

received drinking water twice a day, but due to the diminishing yield at water sources, the supply has been reduced to once a day.

Officials attributed the decline in yield to the collector well situated on Aalavanthan ghats, which draws water from the Kollidam river bed. This well caters to the drinking water needs of wards 1 to 7 in Srirangam and Thiruvanaikoil. Unfortunately, the poor flow of the river has led to a decline in the well's output. With no rainfall to replenish groundwater, further reductions in yield are anticipated.
To address the ongoing water scarcity during the summer months, Trichy Corporation announced on Sunday that seven wards in Srirangam and Thiruvanaikoil will receive

drinking water supply

only between 5 am and 8 am. Previously, these areas also received water in the evening from 5 pm to 6 pm. The decision aims to facilitate groundwater recharge near the collector wells.
"We will halt the evening drinking water supply to the seven wards, which may aid in replenishing the groundwater table near the collector wells," stated an official. Once the drinking water yield from the collector wells stabilizes, the usual water supply schedule will be reinstated.
It's worth noting that since March 17, 2024, approximately 67 localities in the city have been receiving drinking water only on alternate days due to the declining water yield.
