TikTok
is said to be experimenting with
60-minute video uploads
for a select group of users in certain regions. While this marks a significant shift from the platform's initial 15-second format, TikTok says it doesn’t have any immediate plans to make the feature available widely.
According to a report by TechCrunch, TikTok says that the trial is aimed at creators who are seeking more time for content like cooking demonstrations, tutorials and in-depth explorations.
The company suggests that with support for uploading
long-form videos
, creators will have flexibility for sharing content from more categories.
These may include the possibility of even full TV show episodes being uploaded (though this hasn't been confirmed). Currently, creators and even streaming giants have to upload content by breaking up into multiple parts.
An increased length support will save them from additional work of splitting the videos.
How longer videos on TikTok may help creators
Notably, TikTok has been increasing the length of the videos which can be uploaded on the platform. The longer video option places TikTok in even closer competition with
YouTube
, the dominant platform for longer-form content as well as Elon Musk-owned
X Platforms
, that has already seen full-length movies and even football matches being uploaded in the past.
Additionally, this move will help creators, who post longer videos on YouTube, to diversify their content streams by also publishing on TikTok.
It remains to be seen if 60-minute videos will be widely adopted by users or creators. In January, TikTok was seen testing 30-minute uploads.
