Rudrapur
: The
carcass
of an
eight-year-old
male tiger was found in the Dolly range of
Terai
East forest division on Tuesday, marking the second death in the last few days and the third death of a tiger recorded this year.
On Tuesday afternoon, during a routine patrol, forest personnel found the tiger’s carcass on the roadside near Kotkharra-2 on the Baud Khatta road, approximately 1.5 km from Imlighat Gate near Shantipuri in US Nagar district.
The team of veterinarians who conducted an autopsy on Wednesday evening said that the injury marks are suggestive of a potential wildlife conflict or collision with a vehicle.
Anil Joshi, sub-divisional officer (SDO) of Terai Eastern Forest Division, said, “Deep injury marks on the tiger’s head suggest collision with a vehicle. A definitive cause of death will be established after the postmortem report.”
On Jan 6, a six-year-old tiger was killed after a collision with a vehicle near Sanjay Forest in the Tanda Range. Most recently, on Tuesday, the carcass of an eight-year-old tigress was found in the Ringora beat of the Kosi range of the Ramnagar forest division. A similar case was also reported ten days ago in the Dolly range area, where forest personnel discovered the carcass of a leopard.
While there has been an increase in tiger numbers according to the recent tiger census, concerns loom over the region’s wildlife safety. Within a span of 12 months, five tiger deaths have been reported in Terai. On Feb 27, 2023, an eight-year-old tiger died due to territorial conflict in the Fato zone of Jaspur. On Nov 23 last year, a tiger found injured in the Terai Eastern Forest Division succumbed after 16 days. Another 14-year-old tiger died in a territorial conflict in the Surai range on Dec 27, 2023.
