TRICHY: Three people, including a woman and her son, died on the spot when a truck rammed an autorickshaw they were travelling in on the
Trichy-Karur National Highway
(NH) on Thursday night. The accident happened
Pettaivaithalai town
in Trichy district around 11 pm.
The deceased have been identified as
S Sumathi
, 65, of Analai village, her son S Saravanan, 35, and autorickshaw driver A Aravind, 30, of Thirupparaithurai.
Saravanan and Sumathi were returning home from a hospital in Pettaivaithalai town. Sumathi was unwell.
While the autorickshaw was approaching Sakthi Nagar locality on the Trichy-Karur NH, a truck carrying mineral sand rammed it. Police said the wheel-bearing of the truck had developed a snag and caused the accident. The impact of head-on collision was such that both the truck and autorickshaw plunged into an irrigation canal running parallel to the national highway.
Pettaivaithalai police arrested truck driver M Velliraja 30.
