'Taking responsibility of defeat': AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam resigns as party loses LS polls

, general secretary of the All India United Democratic Front (

AIUDF

), on Monday resigned from all party posts after the party lost the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Assam. Islam took responsibility for the party's performance in the state.
"By taking responsibility for the

defeat

of the party candidates in the Lok Sabha polls, I resign from all party posts," Islam who represents the Mankachar assembly constituency, told ANI.

AIDUF contested in three states in the Parliamentary elections -- Dhubri, Nagaon and Karimganj, but lost all three seats.
Badruddin Ajmal, AIUDF supremo, contested from Dhubri, which has been the party's stronghold since 2009. However, Ajmal lost the seat to Congress leader Rakibul Hussain.

Out of a total of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, BJP won nine seats, Congress won three, and BJP's allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United Peoples' Party, Liberal (UPPL) got one each, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI)
Covering the 14 constituencies in Assam, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kaziranga, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Diphu, Darrang-Udalguri, Karinganj, Silchar, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, and Guwahati, the voting was held in three phases- April 19, April 26 and May 7.
