TRICHY: Two people died after an overspeeding official vehicle of a
tahsildar
rammed a couple of two-wheelers on the Trichy-Madurai national highway (NH) at
Manikandam
near Trichy city on Sunday.
Police
are on the lookout for the absconding driver who caused two deaths.

personnel said that one A Pushparaj, 37, was driving a government jeep (TN 45 G 1726) bearing a name plate tahsildar (reception), Trichy.
The jeep was proceeding towards Trichy city on Madurai-Trichy NH. While approaching the Manikandam union office building, the overspeeding jeep crossed the centre median of the national highway. Further, the jeep moved in the wrong direction on

A bike and a moped approaching from the opposite direction were rammed by the jeep in which one P Dhanapal, 44, was thrown out of his bike and killed on the spot. One M Mani, 58, riding a moped was also knocked down by the tahsildar’s jeep. Mani succumbed to injuries at the Trichy MGMGH. Dhanapal was a painter while Mani was a rural temple priest, they were heading to Viralimalai for work.
Meanwhile, locals secured the jeep driver Pushparaj. Meanwhile, the jeep driver Pushparaj sustained minor injuries and was taken to Trichy MGMGH in an ambulance. But the accused fled the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Manikandam police have registered a case and are on lookout for the accused jeep driver.
The government jeep was accused of overspeeding, and eyewitness claimed that the jeep driver was under the influence of alcohol. However, Manikandam police did not approve the claims. Samples were not collected from the driver either.
