BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Pre-historic meets present-day at New York City's newest art exhibition in a Brooklyn subway station.
Rex’s NYC Dino Store opened to the public as an art installation at the Grand Army Plaza subway station in Brooklyn in May. The project comes by way of the MTA in collaboration with artists Sarah Cassidy and Akiva Leffert.
The art exhibition features a human-sized dinosaur store owner along with dozens of pre-historic-themed snacks, necessities, and other deli items like Alka-Saurus, Snarlboro and Meteoritos. Passersby can also find copies of Pangaea Post, The Pangaea Times, and The Maul Street Journal.
"This creative project is part of the MTA’s Vacant Unit Activation Program, which aims to fill underutilized spaces in the subway system with non-traditional uses to make stations more welcoming and vibrant for riders," a representative for the MTA said in a social media post.
The Vacant Unit Activation Program launched in 2023, works to find non-traditional ways to use empty retail spaces in the subways, according to the MTA. The spaces used in the program have been vacant for years due to their size limitations, shape or location.
Rex’s NYC Dino Store is the tenth project launched since the start of the MTA's Vacant Unit Activation Program.
