St. Patrick's Cathedral honors Pope Francis during Mass in NYC this weekend

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) -- In continuing to honor the life and legacy of Pope Francis, mourners will gather at St. Patrick's Cathedral for a special Mass on Saturday.

The historic Cathedral on Fifth Avenue will hold a memorial Mass in celebration of Pope Francis' life starting at 12 p.m. Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations will lead the Mass in New York City.

The funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday drew around 200,000 people to St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City on Saturday morning.

Francis, the 266th head of the Catholic Church, died one day after Easter and nearly a month after his release from a hospital. According to the Vatican, his cause of death was a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure.

Francis was hospitalized in February for five weeks due to double pneumonia that required high flows of oxygen and blood transfusions.

Following his burial, Catholic cardinals will gather to vote on who should be the next pope, known as a conclave.
