Specially abled people on Monday held a sit-in on a busy road in Chennai, demanding the implementation of an order that provides for 1 per cent reservation for visually impaired people in government jobs.
The protesters sat or lay down on the road at Chatpet Bridge during peak hours due to which traffic was affected for nearly half an hour.
They demanded the Tamil Nadu government implement the order at the earliest.
Last year, the state government passed an order mandating 4 per cent of government jobs to the specially abled. Of that, a 1 per cent quota was reserved for visually impaired people.
The protesters also demanded that the unemployment relief fund should be increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 and a hike in monthly assistance from Rs 1,500 to 5,000, keeping in mind inflation.
Police intervened and removed the protesters from the site after they refused to move, which resulted in traffic congestion in the area.
According to officials, the protesters' demands were under consideration, but owing to the bulk of data which needed to be scrutinised for job allocation, the process was delayed.
