NOIDA: Following prime minister Narendra Modi's announcement of
PM Surya Ghar
:
Muft Bijli Yojana
(PMSGMBY - free
domestic solar energy
scheme) earlier this month, the Noida power department plans to hold
awareness camps
to promote
solar energy
in the city soon. Under the scheme, a 75% subsidy will be given for solar systems up to one kilowatt (kW).
In this, a 50% subsidy will be given by the central government and a 25% subsidy by the state government.
Similarly, a 60% subsidy will be given for a 3kW solar system. The consumer will have to apply online to avail the benefits of the scheme. The PM on Feb 13 earlier this month announced the commencement of PMSGMBY from his official X account. The project, with an investment of over Rs 75,000 crores, aims to light up 1 crore households by providing up to 300 units of free solar energy every month.
“We plan to conduct awareness campaigns and organize camps to promote the use of solar energy for domestic consumption soon, by next month. For this, the government will provide a subsidy under PMSGMBY. Apart from a 75% subsidy for one kW solar energy, the government will give a 36% subsidy on a 5kW solar system for domestic use,” said an official of the Noida power department.
According to Rajeev Mohan, chief engineer of Noida power department PVVNL, “The consumer will have to apply online to avail the benefits of the scheme. Once the solar connection is availed, the bills of consumers of the said scheme will also be reduced by more than 50%. For a connection up to 5kW, an area of 500 square feet (sq ft) is required on the roof of the consumer's house,” said Mohan.
The Union ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) has introduced a simplified solar subsidy scheme whereby residential customers can avail subsidy benefits on their grid-connected home solar system.
While the cost of a 3kW to 5kW solar system in India is around Rs 2 lakh to Rs. 2.50 and Rs 3 lakh respectively, a 300 sq ft to 500 sq ft rooftop area will be required to set up 3 to 5 kW solar panels respectively for domestic consumption.
