Shakib Al Hasan was at his stupendous best when his team, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, locked horns with Gazi Group Cricketers in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) 2024 on Friday, May 3 at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan No 4 Ground in Savar. Shakib scored 107 runs off 79 balls with 9 fours and 7 sixes.

On the back of his knock, Sheikh Jamal scored 280 for the loss of 9 wickets after being put in to bat first. Coming to bat at No.5, Shakib helped his side recover from 63 for 3 in 18.1 overs. The veteran put on 161 runs for the sixth wicket off 23.1 overs with Yasir Ali Chowdhury, who made a quick-fire 71 off 51 balls.

However, both Shakib and Yasir’s knocks went in vain as Sheikh Jamal lost the match by 2 wickets. Mahfuzur Rahman Rabby scored 125 off 118 balls with 3 fours and 12 sixes as Gazi Group chased down the target with 2 balls to spare. He won the Player of the Match award after he also finished with 5-0-29-3.

As far as the 37-year-old Shakib is concerned, he could not make a breakthrough, but finished with economical figures of 10-0-47-0.

Shakib is not a part of the Bangladesh squad for the first 3 T20Is against Zimbabwe at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

Hannan Sarkar, a member of the selection panel in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), said that Shakib wanted to play in the DPL to get himself ready for international assignments.

It remains to be seen if Shakib returns for the remaining 2 T20Is against Zimbabwe. Shakib is also expected to play a key role for the Tigers in the T20 World Cup 2024, which starts in June in the West Indies and the United States of America.
