Samsung may supply displays for Apple's first-ever foldable iPhones: What to expect

1 year ago 22

Samsung’s Display division is reportedly planning to make

Apple

its next major foldable display client. According to a report by DigiTimes Asia (seen by Sammobile), supply chain sources have claimed that the Cupertino-based tech giant has struck a deal with

Samsung Display

“for the development of

foldable devices

.” However, the report doesn't share any more details about the alleged contract between the two companies.

The report also doesn’t confirm which type of foldable display (flip or fold) Samsung is currently working on for the iPhone-maker’s device. Rumours suggest that Apple’s first foldable device is expected to either be a

foldable iPhone

or a large tablet.

Samsung foldable ‘plan’ for Apple

An earlier report from a Korean publication from December 2023 claimed that Samsung Display has already been restructured to prepare its manufacturing lines to meet Apple's demands.

Samsung

Display has been developing and improving foldable displays for several years now. The company has also made huge investments towards the R&D of its foldable displays. Shipments for Samsung’s foldable mobile business have also increased over the years.
However, the company might be looking to push the revenue generated from its foldable business even further. Apple being a client for Samsung’s foldable display is expected to be a major boost for the company’s display division.

Apple’s foldable devices: What to expect

Previous rumours claim that Apple's first foldable

iPhone

is likely to enter mass production in 2026. The highly-anticipated foldable iPhone may become available for users to purchase later the same year.
The company is also reportedly working on a 20.3-inch

foldable iPad

or MacBook. This device is expected to go into mass production even earlier in 2025 and may hit the market in 2026 or 2027.
If this rumoured deal is to be true, Samsung Display may play a big part in Apple’s foldable device plans. Also, with Apple entering the foldable segment, Samsung may get some serious competition from the US tech giant.
