Resul Pookutty and AR Rahman are two well-known music directors in India, and they have treated audiences with a great touch of tunes for many years. As Resul and AR Rahman are gearing up for the latest film ‘Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life’ by Blessy starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Resul Pookutty has taken a moment to recollect the first time he heard AR Rahman years ago.
In a chat with News18, Resul mentioned that even though they have collaborated and worked together many times, he still remembers the time when he heard a young Rahman on his way back home. Back in 1991 or 1992, when Resul was on a train going back home during vacation, he heard some lilting music coming from the seats behind him and asked who the composer was. Until then, he hadn’t heard of Rahman. Later, he listened to another composition of Rahman when he was learning operatic music. He realized that Rahman’s composition had British Opera influence.
According to Resul, Rahman shaped the new sound of Indian music, and he is an outstanding soundman. Composition is just one thing that he does. “He is more of a sound man for me than anybody else," Pookutty added. Rahman is back after a gap of a few years, which Pookutty reacts to by saying that Rahman was always there, but he was ahead of our times. He mentioned that he could see two Rahmans in ‘Aadujeevitham’. It is how Blessy has written it, knowingly or unknowingly; there is a journey. Resul is the sound designer of 'Aadujeevitham' where AR will be taking the role of music director.
Furthermore, he talked about the reception and acceptance for remixes and artificial intelligence (AI). Pookutty doesn't think that AI can be a threat to music directors as long as all use technology as a tool. Certain languages have gone extinct as people are not using them. Similarly, technology is a tool. Just like someone who has good knowledge in a language, they learn it and use it to express themselves. “If I look at technology, it allows me to do far more precise work than I had done 10 years ago,” Resul stated. But technology sometimes confuses him. It gives a lot of choices in front of the creator, and these choices are based on the sense of art, history, and what the creator wants the future generation to see and hear.
