CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has proposed to upgrade four municipalities --
Pudukottai
,
Namakkal
,
Tiruvannamalai
and
Karaikudi
-- as corporations. Chief minister M K Stalin has directed to initiate the process of upgrading the four municipalities as corporations, according to an official release.
As per the proposal, Pudukottai town and its neighbouring 11 village panchayats would be upgraded as Pudukkottai corporation.
Namakkal town and its neighbouring 12 village panchayats would be upgraded as Namakkal corporation.
Tiruvannamalai town and its neighbouring 18 village panchayats would be upgraded as Tiruvannamalai corporation and Karaikudi town, its two town panchayats and five village panchayats would be upgraded as Karaikudi corporation.
The release said Tamil Nadu is among the most urbanized states in the country. According to the 2011 census, the percentage of urban population in the state is 48.45%. Presently, the percentage of the population living in urban areas is estimated to be over 53%.
The government had initiated efforts to face the challenges of rapid urbanization and develop basic infrastructure to extend better civic amenities to enhance the lifestyle and standard of all sections of people, said the release.
