Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
has virtually laid the
foundation stone
of three semiconductor plants. These units are expected to create thousands of job opportunities in the country. The project is likely to generate nearly 80,000 jobs, out of which 20 thousand direct employment will be for advanced technology jobs while about 60 thousand indirect jobs may also be created.
With these chip units, employment creation in various sectors including downstream automotive, electronics manufacturing, telecom manufacturing, industrial manufacturing and other semiconductor-consuming industries is also expected to accelerate.
Three new chip plants coming soon: All the details
This project of three new chip plants is worth Rs 1.25 lakh crore. In February, the Union Cabinet headed by Modi approved the establishment of three more semiconductor units under the programme 'Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems' in India.
These new chip plants will be setup in Gujrat and Assam. The projects include Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), Gujarat; the
Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly
and Test (OSAT) facility at Morigaon, Assam; and another Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility at Sanand, Gujarat. The foundation of these plants were laid within just 15 days after the Union Cabinet’s approval.
The Dholera plant will be set up by
Tata Electronics Private Limited
("TEPL") in partnership with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC), Taiwan. This fab that is set to get an investment of Rs 91,000 crore will be able to produce 50,000 wafer starts per month (WSPM).
PSMC
also has 6 semiconductor foundries in Taiwan.
The fab in Sanand will be set up by CG Power in partnership with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan and Stars Microelectronics, Thailand. This unit will be set up with an investment of Rs 7,600 crore and will manufacture chips for consumer, industrial, automotive and power applications.
The third plant in Morigaon will be set up by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd ("TSAT") with a capacity of producing 48 million chips per day. This facility is being built at a cost of Rs 27,000 crore and will produce chips for automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.
In December 2021, the programme for 'Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem' in India was first notified with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore.
