NEW YORK (PIX11) – Starting Jan. 1, expecting parents will have more paid time off for prenatal care.
Paid Prenatal Leave, an amendment signed by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul in November, will give employees 20 hours of paid time off for appointments during or related to their pregnancy.
The new law applies to all private-sector employees and includes coverage for fertility treatment, vitro fertilization, and end-of-pregnancy care. Post-natal or postpartum appointments, on the other hand, are not covered.
Only employees directly receiving care can request Paid Prenatal Leave. Confidential information about one's health is not needed to request time off or approve it.
The 20 hours of Paid Prenatal Leave is offered in a 52-week period and does not restart if the employee has another pregnancy within the same 52-week period.
Anyone who wants to file a complaint or report a violation of the state's Paid Prenatal Leave Law can contact the New York State Department of Labor’s Division of Labor Standards.
