According to a social media post from the U.S. Coast Guard, the explosion happened near the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant and may be linked to hot work aboard a docked boat.

Fire officials at the scene said the vessel is owned by New York City and transports raw sewage from the city to a treatment plant.

The explosion occurred on one of the holds on a tank, though the exact cause is still under investigation, said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief David Simms.

The force of the explosion sent one of the workers flying in between the pier and the boat and required him to be extricated, according to the Chief. That worker was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The condition of the other two workers who were transported was not made immediately clear.
