NEW DELHI: A 16-year-old
Class X student
of a school in southwest Delhi died by suicide on Tuesday, a day before his
CBSE board exam
was scheduled to take place.
The student's
father
is a head constable in the Army and his mother is a homemaker.
According to police, so far, no complaint has been filed by the parents or any other person. However, cops are investigating the matter to understand what led the boy to take the extreme step.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the school principal told TOI that a day before the incident, she had met the mother of the student regarding "a concerning video" that had been posted on Instagram, purportedly depicting the teen participating in vandalism of school property.
"Despite this, he had received his admit card and was supposed to sit for the board exam on Wednesday," the principal said.
The suicide, she said, may have been due to examination pressure. "But we don't really know what triggered the tragic incident," she added.
The principal also highlighted that the school regularly provides mental health counselling to its students as part of their "support system" as well as the curriculum. The boy, too, had received counselling.
The student's extreme step, meanwhile, has left the school community in shock, said the principal. "The community is collectively grieving. I personally accompanied the family for the cremation, which took place in UP," she added.
