BHUBANESWAR: Ahead of the forthcoming assembly and Lok Sabha elections, acting director general of police Arun Kumar Sarangi on Sunday asked SPs to prepare themselves by studying electoral offences in 2014 and 2019.
In the first pre-poll preparatory video conference with range IGPs, DIGs and SPs, Sarangi laid stress on vulnerability mapping of polling booths and identification of critical polling stations based on the past incidents of electoral violence, political rivalries and booth capturing (if any). SPs have been asked to prepare a database of those who were involved in electoral offences during the 2014 and 2019 general elections and keep tabs on their activities.
“We will lay special focus on dealing with

circulation of fake news

, photos, videos and derogatory or sensitive remarks on social media. SPs should find out the status of each electoral offence of 2014 and 2019 elections — if investigation was completed, charges framed by courts and if trial was started or not,” Sarangi told TOI.
The in-charge DGP asked the police personnel to identify and map major illegal manufacturing and sale of liquor, drugs and cough syrup hideouts. Sarangi asked the SPs of naxal-affected districts to review each and every case related to poll-related Maoist violence.

“SPs should visit each and every location of polling stations, along with district election officers and review the vulnerability, criticality and shadow areas. The ADG (law and order) would soon prepare a detailed roadmap,” Sarangi said.
Instructions have been issued to police personnel to launch special drives, including registration of cases against habitual offenders, seizure of illegal firearms, illicit liquor and execution of non-bailable warrants.
