NEW YORK (PIX11) – The NYPD is investigating bomb threats targeting three synagogues and the Brooklyn Museum made over the weekend, according to authorities.
Synagogues on West 83rd Street, West 30th Street and Remsen Street were all threatened, along with the Brooklyn Museum, via emails from an unknown sender, the NYPD said. Two of the synagogues were forced to evacuate and Nos. 2 and 3 subway trains were searched for explosives, according to authorities.
The threats were deemed not credible, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul and the NYPD.
“We will not tolerate individuals sowing fear and antisemitism,” Hochul said. “Those responsible must be held accountable for their despicable actions.”
Sen. Chuck Schumer announced $400 million in new federal funding to protect houses of worship on Sunday. The same program allocated $305 million to nonprofits to help defend them against potential attacks.
Jewish and Muslim communities are facing a rise in threats amid the Israel-Hamas war, according to Schumer.
Houses of worship interested in receiving funding must apply by May 21.
The FBI is tracking the origin of the emails. No arrests have been made in connection to the threats as of Monday morning.
