QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- There was plenty of fanfare at the NYPD medal ceremony in Queens when some of New York City's finest were recognized for exceptional heroism and distinguished service.
Among the men and women in blue honored, Detective Sumit Sulan received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on the evening of Jan. 21, 2022.
Responding to a family dispute in Harlem, officers were fired upon inside an apartment.
Officers Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora died from their injuries, sending the city into mourning.
The third officer who responded on that deadly night, Sulan, fired back at the suspect, Lashawn McNeil, killing him before he could flee or do further harm.
One of the most poignant moments of the medal ceremony was the presentation of the Purple Shield to the daughter of fallen NYPD Crossing guard Krystyna Naprawa.
On Oct. 20, 2023, Naprawa finished getting five people across the street when she was fatally struck by a dump truck in the crosswalk at Woodhaven Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue.
In total, dozens of men and women who make up New York's finest received medals and recognition for their bravery and service to our city.
