NEW YORK (PIX11) -- New York City Public School students will enjoy a long weekend this week after a new holiday was added to the school calendar for this year.
Public Schools will be closed on Thursday in observance of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha followed by a clerical day on Friday. While students will enjoy both days off, school administration will still have to report in on Friday.
Eid al-Adha is one of three new holidays added to the school calendar for 2025, alongside Diwali and Lunar New Year. Traditionally it commemorates Prophet Abraham's devotion to Allah and his readiness to sacrifice his son, Ismail.
Eid al-Adha also takes the place of Brooklyn-Queens Day, which previously only gave the day off to students in those boroughs.
The clerical day means no classes for students attending 3-K, Pre-K, elementary school, middle school, K-12 schools and standalone D75 programs. However, students in some high schools may still have to attend.
