NEW YORK (PIX11)-- An air-conditioned transit ride can be the coolest part of a hot day in the city.
On Tuesday, the MTA said 99% of subway cars have AC. If riders find a hot car, they should call 511.
NYC Transit Interim President Demetrius Crichlow says buses will not be put in service if the AC isn't working.
The agency says transit and railroad crews will be staged at key locations and will have extra coverage to respond quickly to any weather-related issues.
The systems can be impacted by extreme heat. Overhead wires can stop working.
Some of NYC Transit's communications and signal systems are more than half a century old.
MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer says state-of-good repair projects will be the focus as the agency reexamines the capital program due to the pause in funding front congestion pricing.
Neighbors are also making the most of city parks and beaches. City pools will not open until Thursday, June 27due to lifeguard staff numbers.
More than 500 cooling centers are open in the city, including libraries and other centers.
