New York State Summer EBT applications open July 1

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — New York's new Summer EBT program benefits low-income households, helping cover groceries while school is out. Families in the program get $120 per school-aged kid for each month of the summer.

The food funds are on a card, and each child has their own. Just like SNAP, the cards are good at retailers like grocery stores and farmers markets.

Lots of families with children already receiving SNAP, Temporary Assistance, or reduced-price school meals are automatically eligible, but others have to apply. New York's Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (ODTA) will open online applications in English and Spanish on July 1. That's the same day they'll open a helpline—(833) 452-0096—for families to find out their status.

To apply, you need a NY.gov ID account and the names, dates of birth, and schools of each child who is applying. You will need the names and income information of every other household member, plus information about participation in SNAP, Temporary Assistant, Medicaid, or other programs. You'll also need to supply contact info like address, phone number, and email. ODTA said that including the child's Student Identification System (NYSSIS) ID number and local student ID would be optional.

Funds are temporary, expiring 122 days after being deposited. Applications are due by September 3.
