New York City launches microhubs to address delivery truck traffic

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- New Yorkers have a love-hate relationship with delivery trucks.

They bring us our online orders, along with traffic headaches for drivers and pedestrians.

“I think it can be intrusive, and it can be dangerous,” said CLIP 8 Melissa Weisman.

“The truck is just parked up and double parked somewhere, maybe in a lane, you have to cut, other people get upset, it causes a little bit of a headache,” added Ishpreet Sing.

That’s why the city has created these designated areas where trucks from Amazon, UPS, and other delivery companies transfer goods to smaller, more sustainable means of delivery like cargo bikes and hand carts, which then take the goods to their final destination. The space is about 80 to 100 feet long with safety barriers in place.

There are also two locations in Brooklyn.

“Traffic would just move more fluently,” said Sing.

"I think traffic is a huge issue and not just for people who drive, but also for people in the area. It is loud and causes all kinds of noise,” said Zev Ross.

According to the Department of Transportation, one in five New Yorkers receives packages four or more days each week, and 90 percent of those goods are delivered by trucks.

"New Yorkers are receiving more deliveries than ever before, and this has resulted in a spike in delivery trucks that pollute our air and create challenges on our streets,” said Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

And although this is a pilot program for now, Rodriguez added that 33 more micro-hubs citywide will come within the next three years.

“I think it is nice to have dedicated spaces just like that where they can do all of their unloading and, in a less congested manner, get the boxes where they need to go.”
