A 16-year-old girl from Mumbai successfully scaled Mount Everest, becoming the youngest Indian mountaineer to scale the world's highest peak from the Nepal side, the Indian Navy said on Thursday.

Kaamya Karthikeyan, a Class 12 student from Navy Children School in Mumbai, along with her father Cdr S Karthikeyan, embarked on their expedition to climb Mount Everest (8,849 metres) on April 3, the Indian Navy said. They reached the peak on May 20.

Commending Kaamya for her feat, the Western Naval Command tweeted along with her picture, "After this feat, she has become the second-youngest girl in the world and the youngest Indian mountaineer to summit the world's highest peak from the Nepal side."

With another feather in her cap, Kaamya Karthikeyan has successfully climbed the highest peaks in six continents. Her next challenge is to scale Mount Vinson Massif in Antarctica this December and to be the youngest girl to accomplish the '7 Summits challenge'.

Earlier in 2020, Kaamya became the youngest girl in the world to climb Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America and outside of Asia.

The Indian Navy praised Kaamya for exhibiting immense courage and fortitude in summiting the highest peaks in six of the seven continents.

"Indian Navy wishes young Kaamya the very best in her aspiration to summit the highest peaks of all seven continents, becoming the youngest girl to do so. #7SummitsChallenge," it said.
