NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Crews working on expanding the Second Avenue Subway line have ceased work due to concerns about funding after the suspension of congestion pricing, MTA officials confirmed on Tuesday.

MTA officials and Gov. Kathy Hochul toured the existing tunnels in East Harlem a few years ago. The next phase of the project would continue the line from 96th Street to 125th Street in Harlem.

The federal government had committed to funding about half the $7 billion price tag. About $100 million in utility contracts have already been awarded. Congestion pricing was needed to pay for the rest.

On Tuesday, the president of MTA Construction and Development confirmed the first steps of the new project are on hold because of the pause in congestion pricing.

The governor has said the state will find a way to keep some projects moving ahead and called the pause on congestion pricing temporary.
