NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister
Mamata Banerjee
on Monday asserted that Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
's pledge to crack down on corruption after June 4 implied that opposition figures could face imprisonment following the Lok Sabha elections. The results of the seven-phase
Lok Sabha elections
, spanning from April 19 to June 1, are set to be announced on June 4.
Addressing a rally in
Bankura
, the
TMC
supremo Mamata Banerjee accused the National Investigation Agency (NIA) of entering Bhupatinagar in Purba Medinipur district without prior notification to the local police.
"The Prime Minister is coming to West Bengal to address election rallies. I have no issues with that. But the way he is saying that stern action will be taken against the opposition over corruption after the Lok Sabha poll results is unacceptable," she said.
During an election rally in Jalpaiguri on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi said that while he advocates for "combating corruption," the opposition advocates for "protecting the corrupt". He promised more stringent action against corruption post-June 4.
"Is this how a Prime Minister should speak? What if I say I will put BJP leaders in jail after the election? But I will not say this as this is unacceptable in a democracy," Mamata said.
"This is essentially 'Modi's guarantee', imprisoning all
opposition leaders
after June 4," Mamata Banerjee alleged.
A team from the NIA purportedly faced an attack by a mob on Saturday while attempting to arrest two key suspects in a 2022 blast case in Purba Medinipur district. This incident triggered a political dispute, with Banerjee accusing the investigators of assaulting the villagers
