Mindy Kaling

turned heads in a structured gown designed by Indian fashion maestro

Gaurav Gupta

. Dubbed "The Melting Flower of Time," Kaling's gown drew attention not only for its striking design, but also for its similarities to a gown previously worn by Bollywood icon

Aishwarya Rai

Bachchan.
Mindy had all eyes on her when she stepped up on the green carpet in a dramatic creation by the Indian designer.

For fashion's biggest night, the comedian-actress showed up in a gorgeous champagne-coloured architectural gown. She kept her makeup subtle, rounding up her look with a sleek wavy bob.
Gushing about her gown, Mindy told Vogue, "It makes me so happy to rep such talented geniuses who happen to be from my community. It's amazing."
Kaling then went on to reveal that her gown had a name. "It's called 'The Melting Flower of Time'," Kaling said during the live stream. She went on to elaborate, "If you look at the cape, you can see that it looks like a flower that was once blossoming and is now melting."

However, it wasn't long before the internet was left with the feeling that her look seemed rather "repetitive". Taking to their social media handles, many fans and fashion enthusiasts noted that Mindy's Met Gala outfit was quite similar to what Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wore at the 75th Cannes Film Festival back in 2022.
Aishwarya wore Gaurav's custom-made queen pink sculpted creation on the third day of the Cannes Film Festival. The ensemble featured silver-embellished pleated details, a trailing bottom and a shell-like structure behind shoulders. Speaking about the inspiration behind the gown, Gupta said, it was "inspired by the birth of Venus, the goddess of beauty and love."

This year's Met Gala dress code, "The Garden of Time," takes its cue from the 1962 short story of the same name by J.G. Ballard, which dovetails nicely with the latest Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, which opens to the public on Friday, May 10, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
